Yesterday I spend quite some time to improve my knowledge on Chinese reading/writing. Even though you can easily survive with just English while living in Hong Kong I do think it will be great if I will finally be able to understand the menu’s and signs I see/pass by every day.
I'm using the books from the series 'Chinese made easy' (as on the picture above) but then the traditional characters version. I do really like this book, unlike some other characters learning books I came across this one actually builds it up in a very logical (but still very challenging way...). Quite quickly you will have a good understanding of some of the most frequently used characters.
Yesterday I finally completed the first book of the series and must say it is really cool to walk around Hong Kong and starting to understand more and more of the Chinese words I see around here :).
Really hope I can keep myself motivated long enough to go through the entire 5 books this series has to offer.

I know how it is when you can't understand a word or sign of the foreign language. It can become pretty frustrating. It is very good that you are motivated enough to learn Chinese on your own. But you would still need a practice. You know what will be the best for you to learn ANY language very fast? Get a girlfriend or just a friend who doesn't speak a word of English or Dutch. Believe me in couple months you will be fluent... Just a thought! Anyhow good luck in the learning process!
Ok, jeroen, from now on, i will not speak any english to you;-)your cantonese will be improved a lot!由而家開始我唔會同你講英文, 你o既廣東話會大有進步!
Hi 'love for child' (Nikita), thanks for leaving me your comment. What you suggested does help indeed, my Chinese girlfriend does help me to practise or correct me from time to time. But still it required a lot of energy and effort to make any progress. I'm not a natural when it comes to learning languages. And especially with Chinese I sometimes feel that I move 1 step forward and 2 steps back ;). It can be a really confusing language to master.
Had a look at your website, looks great. Look forward to seeing some pictures of Sandon Alexandre when he is born.
how long have you lived there? or it is just during the K-1 fights?
Thanks for the great post. Its very important to learn first characters of the language which we want to learn ,using such resources become very easy. Thanks for nice post.
